Both fans and actors got more than they bargained for at the first Soap Opera Festival Weekend at an upstate New York resort hotel.
Michael Levin (Jack Fenelli on Ryan's Hope) was accosted by abusive queries about the way his character mistreats his on-screen wife. But the anger of the female audience did not detour them from mauling and pawing Michael who ran off and sought shelter by his wife Elizabeth's side.

Karen Morris, Faith Coleridge Desmond on Ryan's Hope, lost a potential bundle in modeling fees by joining the soap. She had been a former "Breck Girl" and follows the trail of Jackie Smith and Cheryl Ladd of "Charlie's Angels", Cheryl Tiegs, and Brooke Shields.

August 1980
What has Tom MacGreevy been up to since leaving the role of Tom Desmond on Ryan's Hope ? Tom has been seen in bit parts on All My Children and One Life to Live. He's still living in New York although he did go out to California a while back to see if he could make any career contacts there. Some of you may not know the part of Tom Desmond was specifically created for him after he tried out for the role of Frnak Ryan and didn't get it because they felt he was the wrong "type"

Whenever "Ryan's Hope" tapes an episode that includes the set of Ryan's bar, the cast and crew are usually treated to a glass of draft beer that's drawn in the fully operational taproom created by scenic designer Sy Tomasoff.

At some point they stopped having beer for the actors and crew. I had thought that "perk" ended before 1978 -- guess not.

TV Dawn to Dusk September 1978 Five Soap Opera Stars Know How to Stay in Shape Nancy Addison (Jillian Coleridge - Ryan's Hope) had a weight problem as a teenager and learned that the perfect regime for losing is a combination of exercise and low food intake. " I still watch myself very carefully and limit myself to one meal a day. Dinner is the perfect one because I can sit back and relax. On days when I have to go out to lunch, I make that my one meal." If she's sitting around waiting for taping or learning lines and gets the urge to snack, she finds that rice cakes (24 calories each) combined with cheese or fruit is a delicious and guilt-free treat. "Sometimes I fast for one day, drinking only fruit juices to clean out my system."
Nancy swims 20 laps and jogs a couple miles every day to firm her muscles. " I have found the perfect way to fit exercise into my schedule. I have two dogs and I run them for half an hour in the morning and half an hour at night. They are quite a workout. When it is nice out, I don my sweat pants and sneakers and walk the two miles from my apartment to the studio."
Nancy loves outdoor sports - especially swimming and horseback riding. She takes karate lessons for self-defense as well as exercise. She gets up at 5:30 each morning and goes to sleep at midnight or 1 o'clock, needing only a small amount of rest to function well.Reading this gives me the idea that Nancy Addison probably wasn't very healthy. She surely didn't eat or sleep enough.

At the time this was written I am sure it was interpreted it as a desirable level of self-discipline.
Now, not so much.

Q: We are going crazy. A friend and I keep seeing a commercial for VO5 shampoo and we swear the actress has done a soap. Pleas tell us if we are right and who she played.
A: That is Karen Morris-Gowdy who played Faith on Ryan's Hope. The actress was perfect for a hair commercial.

Lisa Sutton (Nancy #1)
January 1983
This season on Hill Street Blues Lisa Sutton, formerly of Ryan's Hope, playing another policewoman, has been added to the cast for a few episodes. Betty Thomas greeted her like a long-lost sorority sister.
“It's nice having another woman for company on locations,” Betty said. “We sit around talking for hours without once getting around to the subjects of sports or sex.”

From Lisa Sutton's IMDB page:
"Known in the movie industry, along with Amy Lafayette, as "the Chinese doctor ladies" (a pair of traveling acupunturists). Has worked on movies, behind-the-scenes keeping the stars healthy."

John Gabriel (Seneca)
June 1982
Q: I've been crushed ever since learning John Gabriel, my favorite heartthrob on Ryan's Hope, is married. How does his wife feel about watching his love scenes with other women? J.N.
A: John and Sandy Gabriel have been married since 1968, so the sensation of seeing him make love to others on the set has lost some of it's emotional impact. However, Sandy, who also happens to be a TV performer (her credits include All My Children) admits that it can result in a doubly ticklish situation at times. She confides that if she and John feel uncomfortable when watching the other make TV love to a stranger, they solve the problem by simply turning off the TV set.

Earl Hindman (Bob)
August 1976
There are many and varied customs and superstitions among show business personalities. And Earl Hindman, from ABC's “Ryan's Hope”, has his own peculiar one.
Hindman always ask to have an article of clothing worn by the character he plays in a show. When he went for his audition for his “Ryan's Hope” role, Hindman was wearing a policeman's shirt that had been part of his costume for a role he played in a stock company production.
That audition landed him his role as Detective Bob Reid on the soap.

David Clarke's (Tiso) son-in-law was soap opera actor Tom Ligon (Lucus Prentiss on Young & Restless, Billy Bristow on Loving). Tom was married to David's daughter Katherine.
Tom Ligon: David used to call Tiso "kindly, but sinister," and loved working on RYAN'S HOPE - and they loved him too, gifting him with a little something from Tiffany's at the end of his run.
