Economizing
HELEN GALLAGHER (Maeve Ryan , Ryan's Hope) "Oh, I just don't spend any money, I keep so busy, I have no time to shop. I loath shopping! I loath it! I go into a store and my back goes on me - absolutely! I wouldn't be caught dead in a department store! Clothing - that is the worst. Thank God, my mother sews for me. She has always made my clothes."

DAILY TV February 1977
Another replacement in a popular role is ANDY ROBINSON who took over the role of Frank Ryan on Ryan's Hope from MICHAEL HAWKINS in early November.
Andy is tall, lanky, blonde, married to actress Irene Robinson, and the father of three year-old Rachel. He's a native New Yorker who study ant the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Arts. The role of Frank Ryan is practically the first time in Andy's career that he's playing anything other than a "bad guy". He's usually typecast as a psychotic killer as in Clint Eastwood's Dirty Harry of Paul Newman's The Drowning Pool. This season he's also playing a villain on The Streets of San Francisco and Barnaby Jones. It should be quite interesting to see what he does with the role of fair -haired Frank Ryan.

DAYLIGHT TV March 1977
Ryan's Hope's new Frank Ryan, ANDREW JORDT MAGUIRE ROBINSON, is familiar to viewing audiences from the movie, Dirty Harry, and a multitude of nighttime TV guest shots. He's known the actor he replaces, MICHAEL HAWKINS, for many years and says they are good friends. In fact, a few years back, Andrew played Robert F. Kennedy to Michael's John Fitzgerald Kennedy, in the play MacBird. When asked what actress he's most like to work with, he unhesitatingly replied, "My wife, Irene! We'd be dynamite together!!"

DAYTIME TV July 1977
HELEN GALLAGHER (Maeve Ryan, Ryan's Hope) was interviewed in Raleigh,N.C., some time back and said watching daytime soaps was ”dangerous” because “children are watching now.” She doesn't like the idea of children watching "sex, divorce, and abortions” but insisted Ryan's Hope is "set apart from some of the other soap operas because immorality does not take place in an atmosphere of approval.”

This a similar quote to the newspaper one I posted last year about how John Gabriel felt about playing Seneca compared to his other soaps roles.
DAYTIMERS JULY 1977
JOHN GABRIEL (Ryan's Hope): The role of Seneca Beaulac, I felt was kind of a challenge. The other characters I've played on serials (Link Morrison on Love of Life and Teddy Holmes on General Hospital) were very insignificant people in terms of who they were. They were both opportunists. I never really felt I could bring the best I had to offer to either one of those roles. I think I was a little ashamed of them, but I am very proud of Seneca. He's considered a medical superstar."

DAYTIME TV December 1977
FRANK LATIMORE (Dr. Emmett Scott) : When I was on Ryan's Hope, I played a very introverted character, withdrawn, who had problems communicating with his kids, and that began to influence me because there's probably a tendency in me to be that way. So I like the extroverted nature of Emmett, and I find it's good for me, because I can reach out more to people than I did on Ryan's Hope.

He admits, "The first day of fasting is tough, but the final days are great! You feel high and not hungry. After the fast, your appetite is diminished."
LOUISE SHAFFER (Rae Woodard, Ryan's Hope) is glad to be back in New York after working in Hollywood last year. She was featured in the series, All That Glitters. "It lasted only 13 weeks and they didn't give it enough time to get established." As for California, " Too much sun , and you get to feeling dull." She loves " the excitement of New York"

TV Dawn to Dusk September 1978
Five Soap Opera Stars Know How to Stay in Shape
Nancy Addison (Jillian Coleridge - Ryan's Hope) had a weight problem as a teenager and learned that the perfect regime for losing is a combination of exercise and low food intake. " I still watch myself very carefully and limit myself to one meal a day. Dinner is the perfect one because I can sit back and relax. On days when I have to go out to lunch, I make that my one meal." If she's sitting around waiting for taping or learning lines and gets the urge to snack, she finds that rice cakes (24 calories each) combined with cheese or fruit is a delicious and guilt-free treat. "Sometimes I fast for one day, drinking only fruit juices to clean out my system."
Nancy swims 20 laps and jogs a couple miles every day to firm her muscles. " I have found the perfect way to fit exercise into my schedule. I have two dogs and I run them for half an hour in the morning and half an hour at night. They are quite a workout. When it is nice out, I don my sweat pants and sneakers and walk the two miles from my apartment to the studio."
Nancy loves outdoor sports - especially swimming and horseback riding. She takes karate lessons for self-defense as well as exercise. She gets up at 5:30 each morning and goes to sleep at midnight or 1 o'clock, needing only a small amount of rest to function well.

With some of the Ryan's Hope actors' spouses (wives of Deas, Gabriel, Barrow) making appearances on the show -- I'm surprised Irene didn't -- although Andrew & Irene's daughter did.

DAYTIMERS December 1977
JOHN GABRIEL (Seneca Beaulac, Ryan's Hope): I think love comes to people at different times in their life. I don't think love depends on the calendar or the clock. For some people love never comes. For others it happens a lot. In this country we equate love with youth, which is not necessarily valid
