As I said in the Bucky party thread --- because of Soapnet's rebroadcast - - new details have come out that has made it easier for me to understand and accept why actors left -- and why it was the right decision for them. Malcolm left because he wanted to see what he could do in Hollywood was the story that I had read and heard-- but that wasn't the only reason. In a radio interview a few years ago -- he said he didn't want to play nice guy Pat, anymore, was another reason he left. When they changed Pat (several months into the beginning of the show after Pat started out as a chauvinist playboy ) he said they made Pat closer to his (Malcolm's) own personality. He modestly said people say he is a nice guy -- but he became an actor to play roles different than himself. And Malcolm's girlfriend (and future wife), Rebekah, was relocating to California because of her career -- was yet another reason he left. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- (This is a combination of the radio and some info from magazines ) Malcolm got a little work in California -- however - - he had the same problem -- he was cast in mainly nice guy roles and was seen as too nice for other roles. While out there, he knew someone at CBS -- and they gave him a one-year development contract (to use him in their TV shows and movies) -- but he said nothing ever came of it -- although they did pay him for doing nothing. When Hollywood didn't turn out like he hoped, he returned to RH in 1983 -- then, however, Pat (still a nice guy) was seen as a secondary character -- and the show wasn't the same for him or the character as it had been in his first run. Again, he received a steady paycheck -- and playing a secondary role gave him free time do theater and appear at health fairs with his wife. When he left in 1988 -- he said he had been taking acting lessons again-- and he had a renewed interest and felt excited about acting again --- and wanted to see what he could do outside of daytime (again). ------------------------------------------------------------------------- After that new info I didn't feel as sad that he left - - I felt bad that he never got the roles in nighttime TV and film the way he wanted (although that is probably true for most actors )

Malcolm has a face that exudes sweetness so I can see that it might be difficult for him to be seen as anything other than the nice guy. It might not be as interesting to play the nice guy, but it gets you lots of fans. Loved Malcolm as Patrick.

Ugh........soooooo sad to know that I've just watched Malcolm's last episode. All of these cast changes were really hard to deal with and really had an affect on the show. Pat = Cutie. Marilyn

He does have a sweet face. But sometimes that can work in a story where he would be a bad guy or whatever. Too bad he didn't get any of those types of roles.

I have always considered Malcolm "the real Pat." Sad to hear this was final episode.

I told this the previous rebroadcast when someone mentioned Malcolm's other roles.
The first role I saw Malcolm in after Ryan's Hope was the 1981 ABC Afterschool Special - - A Matter of Time. I tuned in to see Rosemary Forsyth (I watched her on Days of Our Lives) and was surprised to see Malcolm, too.
Malcolm played the nice brother-in-law, (Rosemary's) son-in-law, husband on the show.

Hahaha - I meant for nostalgic reasons only. I haven't seen most of them since they aired, but I understand most of the acting/writing in them was NOTORIOUSLY bad!!!! ;-)

I would love to have a DVD set of the After School Specials if only to see the actors / actresses who began their careers with these shows.

Screen caps of Malcolm as Jim Allerton in the ABC Afterschool Special -- A Matter fo Time. Aired February 11, 1981. I also put these in the RH Actors Other Roles photo thread.
Malcolm with Karlene Crockett as his sister-in-law and Carrie Freeman as his wife.
Wayne Heffley as his father-in-law.

Yes, nice pics.
Now what can you tell us about the religion he got into? Didn't he become some sort of minister?

The website hasn't been updated since 2010 (and those 2010 updates [in the Calendar section] were just dates of classes/sessions he was having that year)
