Contrary to popular [Ryan] opinion, I happen to think that Pat is the Good Son. He's the one who listens to everyone's problems, he supports his family, he does (practice medicine) rather than Frank, who does nothing but Jillian. [I'm sorry, where are my manners?]
And Pat is the one who keeps the Irish heritage alive. I know to some it seems a distraction, but in addition to the focus on religion and the culture of NYC, the Irish culture is at the heart of this show. Except for Mary's fascination for Irish lace, Pat is the one Ryan who keeps the Irish heritage alive for the audience. As many times as I've seen the first episode (17 times???) I never fail to be surprised and delighted at the reveal of "How the River Shannon Got Its Name."

I completely agree as well. I love Pat. Since this is my first time seeing these episodes, I can't yet account for how I'll feel in the future. But I absolutely agree he is the better son, and I think he is much more of a mensch than Frank is. I love watching him interact with patients.
I understand some can see him as a wimp, a patsy, whatever. I just see him as a trusting, sensitive soul. Perhaps too trusting, too sensitive, etc. But I really like him.
And you are absolutely right, Rags, he is the essence of the Irish on this show.
And, he is very easy on the eyes.
J.

I also love Pat. He is someone I would be happy to be friends with. And I adore his songs and stories and charm.
I truly hate the upcoming storyline with Faith and Dee. The outcome breaks my heart every time.

But I must say that the way he ....... SPOILER plays out his drug addiction and all the scenes that lead up that addiction, really impress me with his acting abilities and these are some of the scenes I like best.

ITA Cheryl. Pat Ryan really is the essence of Ryan's Hope. He honors Marve's homeland, and Johnny's heritage.
Plus he is always compassionate and kind. If it is a flaw to be compassionate, I much prefer it to selfishness.
He is a fine doctor and he feels deeply for his patients. I wish Marve and Johnny would show a bit more pride in Pat's accomplishments. They fawn over Frank, but imo, Pat's being a fine man, as well as a fine physician, should be noticed,(and mentioned) more by his parents. -Echo-

When you look at it, it seems that Maeve and Johnny had two important children and three not-reallys. Frank and Mary are always the golden children. Pat knocks himself out to be noticed and recognized, but the success he achieves is always quite limited. Siobhan becomes the rebel to carve a niche she can comfortably occupy, and Kathleen -- what can you say about Kathleen? How about, that she was a strong and supple spirit who was able to find a robust life for herself and her family that did not include her family of origin.
And as for how Muh and Duh Ryan felt, I think it gets expressed perfectly the time Duh tells Frank -- in deep confidence, of course -- that Kathleen's girl(s) don't really count, and that as far as he is concerned, Little John is the first true Ryan grandchild.
Piece of work, these Ryan parents, when you look at it from this point of view. Don't good parents at least make some kind of effort to treat all their kids equally, give them all a sense of equal importance?

ITA, Debbie. Perhaps the way he is overlooked by Ma and Da is one reason he needs to be Dee's White Knight.

ITA, Debbie. Perhaps the way he is overlooked by Ma and Da is one reason he needs to be Dee's White Knight. That would never in a million years have occurred to me, but it's an astute observation. It seems quite possible, when you think about it.

His need to please is so huge, it overrides everything else. On the positive side, he would have been a terrific lover.

Pat's the kind of guy who, when he said, "Your satisfaction is as important to me as my own," would've meant it.
