Qtee, Alex knows that 'it' won't work because Jack had so much vascular damage in the lower abdomen that he had to re-route blood flow in order to save his life. And blood flow, of course, is essential for 'it' to perform.
LOL about the little reflex hammer. That would scare 'it' half to death!

I agree that Mary's conversation with her mom is just the way she is. It's the relationship she has with her mother. Some mothers and daughters actually talk about stuff like that. LOL But if I were Mary, knowing that Maeve tells Johnny everything ... I'd have kept my mouth shut!

From now on, in deference to Jack's - ahem- condition, The Ryan's will never have cause to mention: HotDog on a stick HotDog with everything Beanie Weenie HotDog Pie Corn Dog Casserole Viennese Cutlet Wiener Schnitzel Puca

I think we should just call it 'it.' Respectfully, of course.

Honestly, I don't think discussing it with her Mother was out of line, nor Maeve's sharing with Johnny. It is a medical problem, a result of his accident and would be a cause of sadness and difficulty for Mary and Jack. Their feelings would become apparent and at least her Ma and Da would know why. Maybe that is as far as it should go though, and Ma and Da should treat the subject delicately. As far as Maeve's sharing, it would have been yucky for me but not for Maeve and Mary!

But Mary wasn't discussing the medical problem, it was yet another discussion about how Jack is so insecure, and love-making is the way they communicate, etc. If it was just a discussion of a broken arm I could see it. But not the intimate nature of their marital relationship. Let's think of it this way: will Jack be happy to find out that Johnny [and Maeve] knew about his very personal, intimate issues?

Mary really needs to learn to keep her mouth shut. When you are married and/or in a relationship with someone, you need to learn how to keep personal secrets to yourself. My gosh...Jack doesn't even know he has this problem yet and Mary is blabbing his personal problems to Maeve.....and then to everyone else in Riverside! This is my first rewind and I cannot believe that I could hate Mary so much. I thought the later Mary's were just bad actresses and that's why the recasts were unsuccessful. As it turns out, Mary was unlikeable from the start!

Poor Mary. It's not her fault that info as important as Jack's impotence must be repeated over and over again. The show couldn't afford to get her some friends just for that purpose and she wouldn't talk to herself., so that leaves ma and Da et al.
I think she's lucky to be able to confide in her family.

That is my point~ she needs to confide in someone for her own sake, esp. since Jack is in no condition to hear this information now. Doesn't she need emotional support? Who else does she tell? Any medical people should respect privacy. So should everyone else, but Mary needs to talk about it to her parents!

As I said in the beginning, she needs to verbalize her feelings for the sake of the audience and so she has to talk to somebody out loud. I just would rather she talk to a close girlfriend -- especially Faith, who is trustworthy and non-judgmental -- than her mother. I think Mary is not quite as liberated as she would like to think.

I guess I was thinking of Mary as a real girl with a real family and real problems, not only a character needing to verbalize. She needs to share her problems with her Ma, who always has given her good and loving advice. Faith is a good friend, but not her emotional confidant as Maeve is. It really is a medical problem as well, and belongs to both her and Jack. The fact that as we know later on, Jack cannot bear to share and seek support, speaks to his repressed personality, and is his loss. He would have been much better off emtionally if he had let them all help and support him.

Johnny is not a compassionate man and should have been left out of the confidential information loop. If it meant that Mary knew that Maeve would tell Johnny, she shouldn't have told Maeve at all. At All. Because SPOILER IN BEIGE: Who do you think is the person who blurts out the truth to Jack in the form of a personal attack? Yeah, Johnny. Jack is not happy that Mary is pregnant, and what does Johnny say? "You better be happy, because this is the last child you will ever have." It was a stupid, cruel thing for Johnny to blurt out.

But entirely in character.
By the way (refresh my memory), Jack does eventually get "fixed", right? And they do resume "normal relations", but they do never again conceive a child (right?)

SPOILER IN BEIGE: Jack gets his plumbing fixed. He later tests it on Martha McKee, who grades him A+. (Later on he will deny it, but it seems pretty clear that yes, they took it out for a test drive.)
No, they never conceive a child again. Mostly because 1. Mary is too busy at work (a constant theme for the rest of their marriage) and 2. The "real" Mary died the day they came back from their honeymoon. 3. Then even the "fake" Mary died.

Why would you tell Mary to shut up? That is mean and I don't like those words. You made me cry because of what you said about Mary. My favorite song is Mary Had a Little Lamb and my grandmother used to sing it to me every night before I went to bed By the way, what does TMI mean? Totally Mean and Immature? That describes you hehe.

It means Too Much Information. Like telling your mother personal details about your intimate married life. As for mean and immature, Mary telling her mother that she should have kicked Delia out of the house that she does not live in was pretty mean, and asking her parents if she is still on their health insurance (when she is a grown up, married woman, not living in her parents' home) was pretty immature. And again, assuming that being a Ryan trumps everything, even common sense, she asks her father is there is some sort of exemption for sons-in-law so Jack can claim benefits under Johnny's plan. I can't wait for Art to get here to set Jack straight about insurance. (Because that turned out so well the last time he tried to advise him.)
